Ritual vessel for 'salt' ceremony

A heavy and hardwood container with ancestor-figure and elephant on top. These objects were used for rituals with salt by the Tharu people in the Terai in Nepal. The movable top has a typical shiny patine, grown after many years of handling. This piece is from 1st quarter 20th century and originates from a French collection.
