Authentic tribal bilum bag from Papua New Guinea, traditionally used as a shaman’s or healer’s medical bag. Bilums are handwoven carrying bags central to both daily and ceremonial life, created using looping fiber techniques passed down through generations.

This early example is woven from natural plant fibers and is adorned with various seashells, adding visual distinction and symbolic significance. Shell embellishments in Papua New Guinea often denoted status, spiritual power, or exchange value, enhancing the ceremonial importance of the object. The handle rope is macramé and raffia, designed to be worn suspended from the head or shoulder in the traditional manner.

Bags of this type were used by tribal shamans to carry medicinal plants, ritual objects, and sacred implements, serving both practical and spiritual roles within the community. The organic materials and construction techniques exemplify the artistry and cultural significance of Oceanic ethnographic objects. No stand included.
