Yokut Polychrome Figural Bowl
An energetic and highly colorful large bowl with diamond rattlesnake bands bisected with split triangle/arrowhead elements bi-colored lightning bolts between them just under the perimeter. Also in between the two sets of split arrowhead elements is a solitary woman, and above her a man and a woman holding hands. Of special note is this: In the close up one can see two “signatures" that the weaver included at the termination of weaving the bowl: a singular prominent red hourglass symbol at about 11 o'clock, and then a halved diamond with a subtle diagonal line at about 2 o'clock. Some weavers would acknowledge that only The Creator is perfect, and they as humans would show their respect a human by weaving intentional mistakes to show their respect. This was from a major collection of Yokut baskets from a geophysist who lived in Porterville, CA pre 1940. Part of his collection is seen in the historical photograph with this basket highlighted with a blue arrow. A gorgeous basket.
