Diné [Navajo] 2 panel saddle blanket, c. 1920-1930: awesome abstract art 'diptych' [W0904]
American Indian Antique Art and Southwest Native Originals
90+ years ago, this Diné [Navajo] weaver had great artistic vision and weaving skill. She created awesome abstract art with 2 different fields (panels), dramatically outlining both with bold red and black borders. For me, the top panel with natural, variegated grey center field seems to simulate the dramatic mesa landscape of the Navajo Nation! Was it her intent to weave the natural grey wool variegations into patterns creating a delightful pictorial landscape? Of course we don’t know, but that’s how her awesome weaving speaks to me.
Her creative spirit did not end there. She also created stunning abstract art with the bottom panel by overlaying a bold black and red-outlined white rectangle onto the plain grey field. In effect, 90+ years ago she created an amazing abstract art 'diptych' textile. It now makes superb, stunning wall art, while providing a window into Navajo history and culture!

Condition
Professionally cleaned. NO fade. NO dye bleed. NO moth damage. NO toxic moth treatment. NO odors of tobacco, chemicals, or fragrance. NO mold. Professional repair of minor selvedge breaks. COLOR VARIATIONS in the plain grey center field, and in the black outer border, are due to natural color variation in Navajo sheep wool. I believe the weaver may have purposely chosen certain natural grey color and pattern variations to create a more interesting design. To me, those variations in color and weaving pattern are a wonderful reminder of the mesa landscape that is so distinctive in the Navajo Nation and surrounding region! We treasure, respect and collect antique Navajo weaving art for its awesome beauty, unique artistic vision, and creativity--they move us spiritually, aesthetically and emotionally. They provide a window into Dine history and culture. We always are awed in knowing their creation requires hundreds or even thousands of hours of dedicated hand labor using knowledge and skills inherited from Navajo ancestors.
