American Indian Antique Art and Southwest Native Originals

100+ years ago, this Navajo weaver had wonderful artistic vision in creating this bold and beautiful abstract art design.  Clearly, she was inspired to envision and spend hundreds of hours creating this stunning abstract art at a time when daily life on the reservation was difficult.

Condition

Professionally cleaned. NO fade. NO dye bleed. NO moth damage. NO toxic moth treatments. NO odors of tobacco, chemicals, fragrance. NO mold. This Transitional Period weaving is beautifully designed, has well-cleaned yarn, and is pretty uniformly hand-spun and woven. So it is NOT a so-called pound rug. Pound rugs are characterized by having poorly cleaned and poorly dyed wool, and by being very loosely spun, loosely woven, and poorly designed. Pound rugs resulted when unscrupulous Reservation traders tried to rip-off weavers by paying absurdly low prices by the POUND for weavings instead of paying fair prices based on quality of design, materials and weave. Size: it is typical and common for there to be minor size variations in Navajo textiles woven by hand 100 yrs. ago on a rustic upright loom. Those insignificant variations do NOT detract from the beauty and value of antique Navajo weaving. This weaving is an awesome, antique, abstract art beauty. We treasure antique Navajo weavings for their beauty, their unique artistic vision, and creativity. We are awed in knowing their creation requires hundreds of hours of dedicated hand labor using knowledge and skills inherited from Dine ancestors. Weft color variation: (1) the weaver clearly intended for her design to have 2 different red shades and the lighter red is NOT fade-- it came from a different dye batch that produced a lighter red than the dark red; this type of color shade difference is referred to as abrash; (2) The black-looking colored weft designs are actually very dark, synthetic-dyed BLUE.
