Jimmie Koots - Hilarious Spread-Eagle Hehey'a Katsina
Buffalo Barry's Indian Art
In my opinion, James Kootshongsie, (aka) Jimmie Koots (1916-1996) was the greatest comic carver in Hopi history. Case in point is this hilarious Hehey’a katsina in spread eagle position. The katsina is 8″ tall including the dramatic feather and 8″ wide. He is gesticulating wildly and I sure wish I knew the circumstances for his antics. He is wearing some sort of animal pelt, perhaps rabbit. There is a repaired break on the right arm (as shown in photo 4) that is unobtrusive. In addition to his comic genius, I have written about Jimmie’s important role as a Hopi traditionalist in my book on “The Great Tradition of Hopi Carvers” (Rio Nuevo, 2019).
