This post was carved in commemoration of an important deceased person many months after death. It communicates to the ancestors to welcome the deceased into the world of the afterlife. The overall majority of “aloalos” have a zebu on top. Zebus are bovine animals with horns that traditionally represent wealth. Many other “aloalos” have birds on the summit. A smaller number have individualized figures on the summit that represent an important aspect of the deceased. In this case, the deceased is represented with a motorcycle, a rare and enviable possession in the village in its time that presumably the deceased owned. The first motorcycle was invented in 1894 in Germany.
