Pre Columbian Taíno Effigy Vessel
Greater Antilles (Hispaniola or Puerto Rico), c. 1000–1500 CE

Hand-built ceramic vessel featuring a sculpted anthropomorphic figures applied to the shoulders, characteristic of Taíno ceremonial pottery. The rounded body with flared rim is decorated with red slip bands over a buff ground,  

The modeled figures, shown seated with hands drawn to the face, reflects the expressive sculptural vocabulary associated with Taíno ritual and symbolic objects. Surface encrustation and mineral deposits consistent with age are present.
