This wood head depicts a guardian spirit in the form of a mythical dragon (Aso), that was originally carved out at the end of a roof cross beam. This figure, along wtih other similar figures on other cross beams, served as spiritual protectors, facing outwards to ward off malevolent spirits and physical enemies.  These elements were reserved for the houses or shrines of prominent nobles, symbolizing protection and status.

Hardwood.  19th century.
