KOMBOKO - KUBA MASK, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO
Arts Tribaux LLC
This mask is a rare form that is used by the Komboko people of the Democratic Repuiblic of Congo. It is not worn on the face, but rather horizontally on top of the head with a cloth covering the face of the wearer. The mask is only a part of the bigger costume. The mask often appears at funerals. In the case of the death of a chief, the dancer escorts the deceased chief to the cemetary and speaks to the spirit of the chief. The mask will appear at future events and renew memories of the chief.
