Large Post Finial
Art of Africa, Oceania, and Tribal Worlds - Dave DeRoche
This top of a Kuba post represents the head of an important noble from the Kuba royal court. The Kuba royal court used big posts at the entrance to their houses. They were symbols of power and were decorated with classic geometric designs or with symbolic portraits of their inhabitants showing their importance in the Kuba royal hierarchy.
A similar example from the same hand or workshop was recorded by Emil Torday in his groundbreaking visit to the Kuba royal court in 1905-1907.
