Mossi Caryatid Ritual Mortar

Dimondstein Tribal Arts

Large mortars used to crush grain are common in West Africa. However, mortars atop a large female figure are rare and were most likely used in the preparation of important rituals and feasts. The significance of this mortar to the people is revealed by the inside wear showing generations of use.
