Ancestral Shrine Guardian
Mark A. Johnson Tribal Art
Large scale (and heavy) guardian mask/face from the end of a noble family's ancestral shrine. The face likely represents a thunder spirit.
The mouth with bared teeth and fangs protrudes further out that most of this style of guardian face. There are remnants of a porcelain cup around the edge of one eye. Originally a cup would have been attached to both eyes. Using a valuable trade item would have emphasized the wealth and high status or the family.
Hardwood. 19th century or earlier.
