Amara Hand Cross
Kip McKesson African Art
A finely carved wooden hand cross from the Amara people of Ethiopia. Ethiopian Amhara wooden crosses, or mäsqäl, are deeply symbolic, hand-carved, and often double-sided Christian artifacts rooted in Orthodox tradition, frequently representing the Tree of Life. These intricate, historically significant items, often produced in regions like Lalibela and Gondar, are used for both daily blessings by priests (hand crosses) and ceremonial processions.
