1920s Hopi Hololo or Moon Katsina
Buffalo Barry's Indian Art
This beautiful Hopi creation from the 1920s is a Hololo katsina which Alph Secakuku says is related to the Muuyaw or Moon katsinam. (Secakuku, 1995, p. 48). Note the crescent moons on the face. The colors on this figure are quite beautiful. It is 9.5" tall including the feathers and the professional base. The arms are in what is called the "belly-ache position" which is one of the characteristics of dolls from the 1920s. The sash is done in simple outline derived from its early lineage also.
