Kolam Mask

Adam Ethnographic Art

Cobra demon mask (Maha Raksa) Sri Lanka. A fabulous mask, finer and older than most you find outside of museums. Definitely 19th century and quite possibly mid to early 19th century? These “apotropaic” masks were used to ward off evil and are worn in towards the end of  Kolam rituals. Some old losses. The eyes are carved separately and one is made of horn, the other wood. This mask comes together with a custom made stand.
