Mask from southeastern Nigeria used for Ekpo Society to represent ancestor spirits. Used for rituals, education,and maintaining social order. Animal features in the elephant-like nose and bird-like mouth. Such masks may represent good spirits or distorrted grotesque faces depicking evil/disease (idiok ekpo). Used in funerals, rituals, and initiation.
