Saltillo Sarape

Old Saltillo Road

A Saltillo Sarape, ca: 1820, using a white spot repeat field design, a round crenelated center lozenge and end bands incorporating design elements created by a weaving technique called "extra weft technique."  This technique is attributed to Native Americans living in the southern reaches of New Spain (now called "Mexico).  It is composed of all native handspun yarns of natural white, bright  indigo dyed blues in two colors, and bright insect dyed red.  An unbleached muslin hanging sleeve is hand sewn on one end.  Hanspun wool weft and warp.
