A Mexican Blanket

  This Mexican Blanket (frazada) is an early example of what is referred to as an "Acapulco Tourist Blanket" because it  was woven by the local Native American weavers and  sold on the beaches in Acapulco starting in the early 20th century.  It is a spectacular example of it's type, with Pre-Columbian iconography covering virtually the whole weaving.  Later examples forshortened the pictorial elements and added large areas of end bands in order to speed up the time needed to complete the blankets.  Examples of this type are coveted which predate this shortcut technique and laboriously celebrate pictorial iconography throughout the blanket.  It is in mint condition...."as off the loom."  No fading, bleeding, dirt, or moth damage.  It dates to ca:1910-1925.

It is the finest example of this category of weaving we've ever seen and would make a great place holder in a Mexican sarape collection.
