A Pictorial Saltillo Sarape

This pictorial Saltillo sarape, ca: 1890 is an extremely rare surviving example of the post classic era weaving.....shorter and more narrow in order to accomodate the change in wearing style from poncho to shoulder wrap.  It is classified as an example of the Aggragate Period of sarape, although here, like the previous example, there is no aggragated center diamond lozenge, but rather, a pictorial image of Santa Ana in a round center.  The colorful and complex field design is a rare type.....few examples have survived.  

This sarape is in "as new" condition.....never used, so the surface of this weaving has never been smoothed out by the rubbing a well used example exhibits.  This sarape was probably purchased by a foreign visitor, taken home, and tucked away before resurfacing a century later. It is undamaged and has no moth grazing, remains unfaded, and show no bleeding of dyes.
