Tulare Friendship Basket
Terry DeWald American Indian Art
Tulare Friendship Basket
A polychrome vessel showing three rows of Female and Male Friendship Dancers circling the basket dressed formally in boots and hats. This rare piece was likely woven between 1890-1900. A classic catalog of basketry was published in 1902 from The Frohman Trading Company out of Portland that displayed similar baskets shown in their catalog (see attachments). All in all this anonymous weaver created 24 figures whooping it up and having a grand time on all 3 stories of wherever they were. This superlative basket transcends the Folk Art spectrum and is certainly special.
