Apache Hide Helmut - Ron Preston
Buffalo Barry's Indian Art
I bought this from Joseph and Janice Day at Tsakurshovi on Hopiland in the 1990s. It was made by Ron Preston who worked at Tsakurshovi at the time. Ron’s father is Hopi from Hotevilla and his mother Yavapai Apache from Camp Verde, AZ. It is traditional Apache leather headgear with yellow ochre coloring and lightning, moon and star symbols. It fits an adult large size head. As is traditional, many turkey feathers are attached to the crown. The base of the cap is 8″ wide. There are abalone discs attached to the red trim on the hat. It has four terraced tabs hanging from the back. The ties to secure the helmet under the chin are 10″ long. Note the glass head is not included.
