Thomas Murray ~ Asiatica

Metal is one of the essential elements of Life. Human civilization charts its progress from Stone Age through Copper, Bronze and Iron Ages. Gold has always been a sacred material, the color of the sun, while silver captured the essence of the moon.

Metal alloys of copper and tin create bronze, while copper and zinc make brass, each with their own merits as to strength, durability, and corrosion resistance.

Ancient cultures learned how to extract and refine metal, creating weapons, tools and jewelry. Agriculture advanced, supporting larger populations, permitting the development of a stratified society including elites of priests and chiefs, professionals, soldiers, workers and farmers. Metal served all, with gold reflecting the highest status.

Indonesia was known in ancient times by Suvarnadvipa, 'Islands of Gold,' the title of our catalog. Included are gold ornaments from the Indonesian Archipelago, worn by noblewomen and warrior chiefs of the outer islands, together with a sampling of ancient Javanese gold from court sites.

The Metal Collection is primarily from Indonesia but also includes objects of ancient India, Argentina and Peru. They are of an early date and capture the customs and the spirit of the Ancestors.

It is my pleasure to invite you to visit my website tmurrayarts.com to find a marvelous array of sculpture, masks, charms, and textiles. However, for viewing the full Gold Catalog and objects in the Metal Collection, we respectfully request that you sign in www.tmurrayarts.com/metal
