Navajo Child's Wearing Blanket
Old Saltillo Road
This Navajo Child's Blanket was woven in the Late Classic Period, ca; 1875. The mix of different yarns and dyes is representative of a Classic Period example, when all left over yarns were saved because of scarcity of materials...... and woven into the weaver's next blanket. Analine dyed red trade cloth was "unzipped" (or ravelled) and then recarded by the weaver and respun into yarn she preferred. Red onion skin was used to dye her native homespun yarn to make the yellow, and multiple colors of indigo dye color the banded blues in each triangle. Finally, 3 ply vegetal dyed Saxony yarn from Europe make up the green yarn.
The composition is even more interesting. This modernist design layout predates the popular period of wall art by 50 years! This weaver's design vision matches the genius of any of the world famous modernist painters!
The weaving shows no fading, bleeding, moth damage, holes, or edge damage. It exhibits the same color intensity on both sides
