Ao Naga - antique 2 1/8" - 3" chank shell slices, acquired in trade from South India in the late 19th - early 20th century, along with antique carnelian beads, also from South India, in a high status necklace distinctive to a wealthy Ao tribe woman - the use of shells was almost universal among Naga tribes, although worn in different sizes, shapes and styles, and the acquisition and usage of such shells was regulated heavily among most tribes - sewn on to a finely woven cotton backing - 16"
