RITUAL FEMALE FIGURE, Yangoru-Boiken

19^th / early 20^th C

This is a stone-carved pre-contact figure.  The paintwork is soft and, with age, has become an integral part of the wood. The elongated form and open face make it one of the more elegant examples of extant Boikenfigures. Boiken figurative sculptures are 
generally more abstract in both facial and overall forms than the neighbouring Abelam, and southern Iatmul forms.
