RITUAL FEMALE FIGURE, nogwi, Washkuk Hills, PNG
Chris Boylan Oceanic Art
RITUAL FEMALE FIGURE, nogwi, Nukuma people, Washkuk Hills, Upper Sepik River, PNG
Nogwi figures are used in the third and final harvest ceremony; this is the most sacred and totally excludes women and children
This figure is of modest size, but has an amazing vitality of form with the body slightly twisted, the head thrown back, and knobled bent arms and legs. It is a wonderfully dynamic piece, with an overall deep black patina, and (as is typical) and stunning red face.
This has been in a private collection in the northern fringe of Sydney for the last 5 decades.
