Pre-Columbian ceramic bird-shaped vessel attributed to the Chavín culture of ancient Peru, dating to approximately 900 BCE to 200 BCE. The vessel is sculpted in the form of a bird, with a rounded body, a curved spout extending from its back, and a prominent handle connecting the spout to the intricately modeled bird head. The design merges functionality with artistic symbolism, demonstrating the Chavín culture's advanced ceramic techniques and rich iconography.

The bird's head is highly stylized, featuring bold, geometric patterns and exaggerated features, such as circular eyes and a beak. The crest atop the head is intricately modeled, adding to the dynamic and expressive quality of the figure. The body of the vessel is rounded and smooth, with minimal embellishments aside from subtle textures that evoke the contours of feathers. A spout projects from the rear of the bird, enhancing its function as a pouring vessel, likely used for ceremonial purposes.

The artifact is made of terracotta, with a polished surface that reveals earthy tones of light orange and tan, consistent with Chavín pottery. The surface shows minor wear, indicative of its age and historical authenticity. The vessel's smooth finish and balanced proportions demonstrate the skill of Chavín artisans, who were known for their innovative and symbolic ceramics.

This vessel likely held ritualistic or ceremonial importance, as birds were significant in Chavín iconography, often associated with spiritual power, transformation, and connection to the divine. The interplay of form and function highlights the cultural emphasis on integrating utility with spiritual and artistic expression. In the collection of her father George Gandelman who owned a gallery in the Miami design district, collected prior to 1970. 8 7/8" in length x 6" in height. Repaired crack above left wing otherwise intact.
