AINU MAT, JAPAN
Arts Tribaux LLC
The Ainu people are ancient indigenous people of Japan with different DNA from the later settlers from the Asian mainland. They share some genes with Native Americans. They live mosty in Hokkaido, the large island in the north of the country. Officially there are only 25,000 Ainu people, but perhaps 200,000 since they hide their ancestry. After over a century of official discrimination, the Ainu were officially recognized in 2008.
Ainu objects are rare to find. This aged mat in good condition is made of reed with a classic geometric pattern of the Ainu, believed to relate to protection. It is not recommended to put it on the floor, but it would make a dramatic statement with professional hanging on a wall, possibly with a professional framing.
