Li "ghost cover"
Chinalai Tribal Antiques, Ltd.
Another version of a Li “ghost cover” from Hainan, China, more similar to the earliest hangings filled with ancestor figures in various hues; although this later version, probably from the early to mid 20th century, features smaller and even denser figures representing the Li genealogy in black surface weave on a natural cotton ground. Like the two other types of ritual cloths, this piece, also woven in narrow strips, in this case joined by machine stitching, would have been used only in the most important ceremonies. While not as rare as the others, it is still not easy to come by.
