Ancestral Tablet
Chinalai Tribal Antiques, Ltd.
Also called spirit or memorial tablets, according to Chinese tradition they were inscribed, or in this example, hand-carved, with a roster of names of the ancestors in order to venerate them and solicit their help and protection; and also as a way of memorializing the family’s genealogy. The tablets might have been kept in a dedicated room in the home, or in an ancestral temple. This Qing period lacquered wood plaque includes both names and figures in bas-relief and was displayed with its own matching wood stand. The panel, which is 15” h x 9-1/2” w with a 1” thickness, can slide in and out of its stand.
