Yoruba Gelede Animal Mask
Dimondstein Tribal Arts
This mask was danced in the Yoruba Gelede festival that honors and recognizes women’s role in maintaining a community’s social order. Though many Gelede masks are easily recognizable by their known superstructures, the oeuvre includes a wide range of designs, sizes, and subject matter that are not so obviously Gelede.
