Dan chief's chair
Chinalai Tribal Antiques, Ltd.
This early to mid 20th century handmade Dan tribe chair from the Ivory Coast or Liberia often was used in tribal ceremonies to give authority and prestige to the tribal chief, who frequently brought it along when traveling since it was so potently symbolic. Hand made from wood and sometimes, as is the case in this example, incorporating metal accents, the chairs were characterized by a bentwood crest rail, carved plank seat and turned legs.
