Chin woman's top and skirt
Chinalai Tribal Antiques, Ltd.
A nearly identical top in David and Barbara Fraser’s book, Mantles of Merit: Chin Textiles from Myanmar, India and Bangladesh, p. 116, identifies this Chin cotton “tunic” as coming from Falam township in western Burma near Mizoram, and estimates it was made between 1950 and 1970. Similar but less detailed skirts are pictured on pp. 122 and 128, both estimated to date from the early to mid 20th century — which we believe may more accurately reflect the age of the top as well — and are also ascribed to the Falam region. While the two were not specified as a set, they came together and complement each other surprisingly well, and we would like to sell them as a pair but will consider separating them. The front-opening top is 15” long x 19.5” across the chest and is priced at $985. The tube skirt, now fully opened, is 35-1/2” long with a 23” waist (46” across) and is $1150. We believe both to be fairly rare.
