Mumuye Horizontal Head Mask
Dimondstein Tribal Arts
These masks embody qualities from different wild animals in the Benue Valley of Eastern Nigeria. These masks were used in rite of passage rituals, including initiations into adulthood and passing into the spirit world after death.
This mask shows signs of extensive use. Most likely late 19th/early 20th century, its raffia had been replaced not long before it was retired from ritual use. The stated dimensions include the raffia.
