1900-1910 Hopi Katsina - Hisat or One Who No Longer Appears?
Buffalo Barry's Indian Art
This beautiful old Hopi katsina has the eerie presence found on very aged carvings. I’ve seen other katsinam by this maker with the distinctive tiny red-tab ears. His name is not known. I went through the Harold Colton and Alph Secakuku books page by page and could not find this katsina. It may be a Hisat katsina or “one who no longer appears” … i.e. one who has faded into history. The katsina is 9″ tall with the professional base adding 1/2″. The katsina is attached to the base with a brass rod through one foot. I would date this to 1900-1910. It has an elegant simplicity.
