Minerva Gallery

Moche IV Stirrup Vessel Depicting a Monkey with Drum (100–700 CE)This exceptional pre-Columbian ceramic stirrup vessel, attributed to the Moche culture of ancient Peru, showcases remarkable craftsmanship and cultural significance. The vessel features an anthropomorphic monkey cradling a drum, rendered with dynamic realism and symbolic intent. The monkey’s expressive face, with its rounded eyes, prominent nose, and detailed headdress, embodies the Moche tradition of storytelling through art.

The piece is composed of earthy tones, including red, cream, and light brown, achieved through the application of polished slip. The surface is finely burnished, with areas of high polish enhancing the vessel's visual impact. The stirrup spout, a hallmark of Moche ceramics, arches gracefully from the back of the figure, demonstrating both functional design and artistic elegance.

Such vessels are believed to have had ceremonial or ritualistic purposes, often symbolizing themes of music, performance, or mythological significance. 10" in height. Private Florida collection acquired through family descent. Collected in the 70s.
