BURMA NAGA ETCHED BONE HAIR STICK
Harry L Neufeld
10” x 1 ¼” – Old and worn flat piece of nicely etched bone, from a mithun, a wild ox-like animal indigenous to the Naga Hills, and worn as a hairpin to tie up the long hair previously worn by many Naga tribal warriors. Although Konyak warriors more frequently used carved wood for this purpose, tribal men from the Burma Naga border of both the Naga Hills and Arunachal Pradesh, including Kalyo Kengyu, Wancho and Nocte, would have worn this piece, as other items utilizing bone notably are from these border areas.
