A Saltillo Sarape
Old Saltillo Road
This sarape is from the Classic Period, ca: 1775-1810. It is woven using finely spun Merino wool weft on 2 ply handspun cotton warp. The rich red and blue colors are from cochineal and indigo dyes.
Written evidence suggests that in this time period, most everyone had a sarape, even the most poor.....there were no overgarments like coats used back then. Only the finest sarapes which have never been damaged have survived, much like of all the pill boxes in use back in the day, only the finest, most expensive, most coveted (like Tiffany) still survive today. Predictably, these remaining surviving examples are highly decorate, finely woven sarapes, which back in their day, cost the most to create.....taking a master weaver over a year to complete. Fewer than one thousand classic period sarapes have survived and this is one of them. It is both striking in appearance and elegant.
The weft is single ply Merino wool handspun. The warp is handmade 2 ply cotton. This sarape exhibits finely spun yarns, tightly woven, with an elegant hand.
