Early Mexican Sombrero
Old Saltillo Road
Any Mexican Sombrero dated earlier than 1900 is considered rare. Few early examples have survived. This one dates all the way back to ca: 1860! Images of people wearing this sombrero are pictured here in A. Garcia Cubas' 1863 large format lithograph entitled CARTA ETHNOGRAPHICA. Notice how ultra low profile the crown is and how wide the brim is in these images. This hat matches the hats in these images perfectly. This is a summer gentlemen's hat made of woven straw.
This is the only example of this early hat we've come across in almost 50 years in the trade!
