Korean Joseon Dynasty Embroidered Silk Rear Drape (Husu)
19th – Early 20th Century
A finely embroidered ceremonial rear drape (husu) from late Joseon Korea, rendered in silk with auspicious crane motifs on a subtly faded ground. This vertical panel (approx. 30 × 50 cm) features multiple registers of cranes — traditional symbols of longevity, nobility, and spiritual elevation — meticulously stitched in silk threads with refined craftsmanship typical of court ceremonial attire. The balanced design and elegant composition reflect the ceremonial function of the piece as an ornamental back panel worn by court officials over formal robes. Despite some color fading consistent with age, the embroidery remains strong and the textile retains a compelling presence.
Condition: Good antique condition with expected fading and patina to the silk; no major losses.
Materials: Silk ground with multicolor silk embroidery.
Dimensions: Approx. 30 × 50 cm.
