A Saltillo Sarape

This sarape, woven in the Aggragate Period (1840-1900) is an example of wearing blankets popular in the post-Classic Period, where the style shifted from the poncho to the shoulder wrap. The length is reduced about 20 inches in this style. This sarape is distinctive because it is a round center lozenge rather than an aggragated diamond and because it incorporates a field of flying birds woven using the "extra weft technique" to create this design element. This weaving technique used to create designs is a trait of Native Americans in the southern parts of Mexico goes back into pre-Columbian times. The round center diamond is composed of a French looking design made popular in the Maximillian Period (1862-187 There is no damage to this sarape, no bleeding of dyes, no holes, and no fading od colors.
