Zuni Home Altar - Koyemshi - 1950s

Buffalo Barry's Indian Art

These seldom appear on the market. This is the third I’ve had in 30 years. This assemblage is referred to as a Zuni “home altar.” At it’s center is a Koyemshi katsina with altar-like panels behind him which have cloud designs on top. To the rear is a higher panel featuring a crown of feathers design. Suspended from the top of the rear panel is a four directional spinner with feathers descending. There are other feathers inserted into the base (see photo 2).  Overall, it is bright and colorful. It comes with an excellent custom metal base which allows it to be displayed very effectively on a wall. The home altar is 8 1/4″ tall, 6″ wide, and 6″ deep. A remarkable piece.
