Jimmie Koots - Gesticulating Hehey'a Katsina
Buffalo Barry's Indian Art
I’ve often written that James Kootshongsie, AKA Jimmie Koots, was – in my opinion – the greatest Hopi comic carver ever. Here is one such example, a zany Hehey’a who is wildly gesticulating. I’m not sure what he’s doing but it is hilarious. Note the deeply carved features on the face. It is quite large at 13″ tall with the heavy metal base adding 1/4″. The katsina detaches from the base for shipping or travel. He has four wooden red chili peppers and soft rabbit fur on the top of his head, and corn husk earrings. A real comic classic by Jimmie.
