GIANT NASSA SHELL RINGS, "Loloi"
Chris Boylan Oceanic Art
TWO GIANT NASSA SHELL RINGS, "Loloi", Tolai people, New Britain, Papua New Guinea
a) Large Ring $6000 82cm diameter x 13cm thick
b) Smaller Ring $3800 48cm diameter x 9cm thick
These giant shell rings, with their fine detail, and strong geometric form, evoke a very contemporary aesthetic. Yet they are age-old objects of traditional wealth. Nassa shells are at the core of the traditional currency of the Tolai people even still today. These rings are an important part of brideprice payments, and also other rites of passage in life such as funerals or compensation payments.
When these "Loloi" are presented at the large community events, such as marriage or funerals, the nassa shells, carefully strung on fine cane are unwound, and sections given away. Those family members or friends who have contributed to the bringing up of a bride, or connected with the recently deceased, are rewarded with legths of shell money. This is always carefully watched and judged.
