COASTAL NAMAU GOPE BOARD, Papuan Gulf, PNG
The costal Namau gopes of the Purari Delta have a distinctive form with a broad pointed oval upper section and narrower flange at the base. They are known as kwoi. These boards were displayed in the ravi, the Men's Ceremonial House within clan cubicles and rarely left the building.
This kwoi has a typical large central face with surroundeing assymetric chevrons and sawtooth designs. This is a good early example, from two important collections.
