                 TWO OLD FIGHTING SHIELD, Wonanera, Eastern Highlands, PNG               

This shield is stone carved, pre-contact and originates in the Wonanera region near the headwaaters of the Aziara River. This is a remote and isolated region, even today. Shields from this area are invariably triangular in form, with a tough can looped shoulder support. Painting tends to be simple or non-existant. This shield is special on two levels: it has a carved ridge that bends across the shield (rare) and definite paintwork - a strong red above the ridge and then traces of white below.
