Ronald Honyouti - Miniature Paakwa or Frog
Buffalo Barry's Indian Art
Ronald Honyouti is one of the originators of the Ultra-Realistic and Sculptural katsina movement. I have discussed his important role in my book, “The Great Tradition of Hopi Katsina Carvers – 1880 to Present.” This carving is exceptional. The dominant figure is a Paakwa or Frog katsina but also included are three small frogs, a turtle, a wicker plaque depicting a turtle, cattails, Hopi cloud designs and other motifs. The inside of the cylinder has been carved out – no easy task. The carving is 5″ tall and 1 5/8″ wide. It is signed on the base, “R Honyouti.” This is a real masterpiece – something Ron Honyouti has produced many times before.
