Neil David Sr. - Large Koyaala with Chickens

Buffalo Barry's Indian Art

Neil David Sr. has been a renowned Hopi artist since the 1970s. In addition to katsina carvings, he makes paintings, lithographs, murals, plus sculptures in clay, porcelain and bronze. This Koyaala with chickens is an exceptional example of his katsina art. He is known for creating very expressive faces on his carvings. This Koyaala is waving at someone or sending them the peace sign. He holds a slice of watermelon. The two chickens at his feet are finishing off other slices. The katsina is 13 1/4″ tall and 7″ wide. It is signed on the base with his stylized double Ns plus other sharp lines. It appears to be dated “96.”
