Manfred Susunkewa - Angwusnasomtaqa or Crow Mother
Buffalo Barry's Indian Art
Manfred is the originator of the Traditional style katsina movement which he initiated in the 1970s. He has won many prizes at Indian art events and had been designated an “Arizona Living Treasure.” I’ve known Manfred Susunkewa for 30 years and have only had a few Angwusnasomtaga katsinam from him over the three decades. She is, of course, Angwusnasomtaqa, or “the one with raven wings attached as hair,” commonly referred to as Crow Mother. This is a large and beautiful example, standing 12 1/2″ tall and 7 1/4″ wide. Manfred is prominently featured in my book, “The Great Tradition of Hopi Katsina Carvers.” Two of his katsinam appear on the front and back covers. The last photo shows his signature on the bottom along with his Spider Clan symbol.
